Class 4

Welcome to Class 4

In Class 4 we have Year 5 and Year 6.

Miss Smith is the class teacher

A note from Miss Smith…

Welcome to Class Four! I hope you all had a relaxing summer break and that the children are excited to be in their new class. I am   really looking forward to getting back into a routine, great lessons and achieving great success with year 5 & 6. I have worked hard to create a warm atmosphere in class with a lot of fun and laughter but lots of learning too. Independence and a hardworking attitude are the key to success in the upper juniors.

Job Share - As you know, I will be stepping up to the role of Head teacher this year which means that I will be sharing the teaching responsibilities with Mrs Boardman.  Mrs Boardman is well known to the children, having been a regular supply teacher in school and has also worked in Class 4 with me previously when Mrs Devey has been absent. I shall be in class teaching Monday and Tuesday, Mrs Boardman will be teaching Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

PE - Lessons are on Tuesday and Friday delivered by the Lancashire Sports Partnership.

Music - Mrs Greig from the Lancashire Music Service will take the Class for Brass lessons on   Tuesday afternoons.  All children will have their own brass instrument and are encouraged to take it home to rehearse

Reading— We have weekly guided reading sessions in which I listen to children read within a group, in addition, we try to listen to the children individually each week, recording comments in the yellow reading record. The emphasis is on developing  reading for pleasure and  children’s understanding of a book, its plots, sub plots and character analysis.  Pupils are free to choose from the school library, or your child may bring a book in from home.  The most important thing  is that your child  has a book they will enjoy reading  but is suitably challenging. Homework will be set from our guided reading book, each child will have their own copy of the book and will have a chapter to read each weekend with set questions to develop a deeper understanding of what they have read.

Spellings  - Each week we will have a focussed objective for spelling and every morning we will study related spelling patterns, the children will be set 10 to 20 words featuring that pattern to learn at home and in school.  On a Friday the  children will be tested on ten of those words.

Year 6 -  The deadline for applying for your High School place is 31st October.  We will shortly be sending out the details regarding the process for application for High School.  If you are planning to apply to St Bede’s they require a copy of your child’s baptism certificate as part of the application.

If you have any questions or concerns, both Mrs Boardman and I are available to discuss your child’s  academic or social progress – just call into the office to make an appointment to see us.

Thank you,

Miss Smith
